Hardwood Floor Repair on the North Shore

Damaged boards, a gap where a wall came out, or a kitchen where tile meets hardwood — many floors can be repaired instead of replaced. Access Wood Flooring repairs hardwood for homeowners in Lake Forest, Winnetka, Wilmette, Glenview and across the North Shore by lacing new boards into the existing floor and refinishing the area so it blends in.

01 / HARDWOOD FLOOR REPAIR

Lacing New Boards Into an Existing Floor

Rather than patching a square that stands out, we remove damaged boards and lace new ones into the existing floor in a staggered pattern, matching the wood species and board width as closely as possible.

This is also how we repair floors where walls, closets or kitchen tile have been removed, so the new section reads as part of the original floor.

Matching New Wood to the Original Floor

Older floors have their own color and character. We choose new boards to suit the existing floor and explain before work begins how closely the repaired area can match.

If the damage is part of a larger project, we can combine the repair with refinishing, new installation or stairwork in the same estimate.

Refinish So the Repair Disappears

After the new boards are installed, the area — often the whole room or level — is sanded and finished so old and new wood take the same stain and sheen.

On a recent Lincolnshire project we removed the kitchen tile, laced 500 sq ft of new 2¼-inch select red oak into the existing floor and refinished the entire 3,000 sq ft main level in a custom beige stain with three coats of Bona Traffic HD.

Can you match my existing hardwood floor?

We match the species and board width as closely as possible and refinish the area so the colors blend. Older floors can differ slightly, and we explain what to expect before work begins.

Do I need to refinish the whole room after a repair?

Often the repaired section is refinished together with the surrounding floor so the stain and sheen match. We recommend the extent of refinishing during your free estimate.

Can you put hardwood where kitchen tile was removed?

Yes. We remove the tile, lace new hardwood into the existing floor and refinish so the kitchen and adjoining rooms read as one floor.
